From the arch in Nari’s brow, Illume knew he didn’t have a choice in the matter. Focusing on yes, the vampire accepted his request.

“We could always use a master mason in our guild,” Illume said. “Now what else needs to be fixed to get this thing operational?”

Gligly21 put the last stone in place. Wiping the dust off his hands, he placed them on his hips, making a soft squeaking noise with his lips. He raised an eyebrow.

“Well, we need fuel to get things going, but I still have some heavy lifting that needs done,” John said.

“I don’t know what kind of fuel is needed for this thing,” Illume said.

“Really?” Nari asked with a hint of surprise in her voice. “Aren’t you like one of the best smiths in all of Valka?”

“I mean, yeah,” Illume replied. “But I’m a master forger, I know HOW to make great armor. I don’t know anything about forge setup.”

“You’re lucky you’re so cute,” Nari said.

She giggled and patted Illume’s breastplate before moving away from the forge. By this point, the sun had passed its apex and was already on its way down. The vampire watched Nari as she walked away. Even in full armor, the way she moved and swayed with such grace was intoxicating to him.

“Hey, lover boy,” John shouted.

Illume whipped around as the dwarf’s words broke his concentration. Gligly21 dusted off an anvil covered in the ash of the burned down forge. Crouching, he grabbed its edge and attempted to lift the block of hardened steel. Pulling with everything he had, the dwarf barely made it budge.

“Would you give me a hand? I’m a dwarf, not a superhuman,” John complained.

Stepping away from the anvil, he huffed in defeat. Illume walked over to the hunk of steel and looked it over.

“Where’s its base?” Illume asked.

“Right,” John whispered.

He kicked around the ash, making its flakes dance to the ground hypnotically. Watching as what remained of the village drifted to the ground, an image of Urtan vanishing in his arms flashed across his mind. Illume froze. Memories lurched into being of the desert as everyone was deleted.

The sensation of the day’s burning sun struck his shielded skin. The smell of battle burned his nose as Anoobys’ laugh echoed in his ears. Rage ignited in him once again. This time, it amplified to a roaring inferno.

Unable to control the burning anger, Illume reached down, grabbed the anvil, and with a primal roar, spun and slammed the hunk of steel into the last standing log wall of the ruined forge.

The impact sent a shock up the vampire’s arm, through his shoulder, and into his upper back. Pins and needles quickly followed the violent vibration as half the wall tumbled backward. Cold sweat drenched Illume inside his armor. His heart pounded so hard, it sounded and felt like a marching band bass drum being rhythmically slammed inside his own head.

Illume’s breathing went shallow as a lightheadedness gripped him. The world around him spun slightly as images of fighting Valkaya replaced Anoobys.
